Tales of a Horse Mom

Humor By Gwen Bartran, Timnath, CO

December 2013 issue

Jean Anne Evans, 15 months old, and her mother on her family’s Texas ranch. By LIFE Magazine photographer Allan Grant, 1955.

Soccer moms have been getting a lot of press… as if they are some kind of supermoms.

But what about horse moms? We have not gotten nearly the appreciation we deserve!

The only things soccer moms have to carry around are a couple of shin guards, a little soccer ball, and a kid or two.

Do they have to feed the soccer ball? Do they have to mulch the soccer field? Do they need a special trailer just to take the soccer ball to the game?

We horse moms have saddles, saddle pads, ropes, halter, bridles, horses and kids to haul around. And, yes, we even have shin guard, too (well, sort of).

We cheerfully help groom and tack our horses and riders day after day, rain or shine. We spend hours hauling our precious horses and riders to and from events and lessons.

We teach our kids responsibility for another living thing. We sacrifice lazy mornings under the covers for wet mornings at the barn.

And who gets all the glory? I’ll give you a hint… it’s not the horse moms. But I wouldn’t trade being a horse mom for all the soccer balls in the world!
