Historic Photos - How Horses Won the West

Bannack , Montana (first Territorial Capital) stagecoach.   A. J. Oliver started a stage line service between Virginia City and Bannack in August, 1863. We rejoiced to pay $1 each for any paper or letter received and seventy-five cents for all letters dispatched. From Virginia City in one day in 1863, 6,000 letters were dispatched to the east by way of Salt Lake , being an accumulation of ten days when the stage was not in operation. Granville Stuart, July 15, 1863.  Note that only four light horses (without breeching) pulled a stage, at least 11 people, and quite a lot of freight. Photo courtesy Bannack Assn.
