Comin’ Outta the Chute

by the Coffee Bar

A Poem by Ann Applegarth, Roswell , New Mexico

September 2013 issue

If you ever went to a rodeo

around nineteen-fifty-six,

you may remember Red McCann

for his saddle bronc ridin’ tricks.

He come outta that chute on a cyclone’s back

lookin’ pitifully skinny and frail,

his bony arm wavin’ and hips no thicker

than his horse’s skimpy brown tail.

In the stands, the ladies hid their eyes,

scared that cute little Red’d die,

but the fellers knew that for Red McCann

ridin’ broncs was a piece o’ pie.

He could always earn enough money

to buy gas for his broken-down car

and enough for a round for his buddies

at the nearest rodeo bar.

And his buddies every one gathered,

and each one of them would say

that Red’s tellin’ about his latest ride

was the highlight of the day.

Old Red’s still around, and he’s still bone-thin,

and he walks with a shuffle that’s slow.

His hair’s striped with gray – looks good that way –

and he still loves the rodeo.

It’s fifty years now since Red sat a bronc,

but the stories are fresh in his brain.

Now the buddies gather at McDonald’s each day

to hear tales of Red’s rides once again.
