Will James Roundup

June 2013 issue

The Will James Roundup — a working ranch horse and ranch-style rodeo — will be held July 12–14, 2013 at the Big Horn Rodeo Grounds in Hardin , Montana . The event raises funds for maintenance of the Will James Cabins at the Big Horn County Museum and is fun for the whole family!

Will James was a noted cowboy, author and artist who owned the Rocking R Ranch, east of Pryor, MT. Cabins from this ranch have been moved to the museum grounds.

The Will James Roundup gives participants and spectators a look at cowboys performing their everyday work on the ranch in a competition setting.

Friday & Saturday competitions include Working Ranch Horse, Youth Ranch Horse, Big Loop Team Roping, and Cow Doctoring.

Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. will feature Ranch Bronc Riding with $2,250 added. This event in known as the “Father of Modern-day Rodeo” — where cowboys ride broncs in their ordinary working saddle and rigging. It is exciting, dangerous and shows the athletic prowess of both horse and cowboy. Live music and dancing follow.

Sunday’s Ranch Rodeo starts at 11:00 a.m. Teams of cowboys and cowgirls compete in Calf Branding, Trailer Loading, Yearling Doctoring, Cow Milking, Ranch Bronc Riding, and Women’s Steer Stopping. The Indian Relay Race, with $500 added money, will take place during the Rodeo.
