Collectibles Corner - August Buermann Spurs

 

Cid Klebenow, manager of Bozeman Saddle Outlet in Bozeman , Montana , owns these antique drop shank women’s August Buermann spurs. She says that they were a gift to her, and she added the leather straps after putting them together with vintage hand-cut silver Diablo buckle sets.

August Buermann immigrated from Germany in 1864 and joined the New Jersey Volunteers in the Civil War. He began manufacturing bits and spurs in 1868 and was one of the most innovative spur makers in the U.S. He manufactured 443 different spur designs and 496 bit styles at his peak of popularity. Although headquarters were in New Jersey , Buermann manufactured California , Mexican, Great Plains and Texas spurs, and employed the finest craftsmen from those regions.

Buermann sold only wholesale and stamped his spurs with many different marks, depending upon pattern, style and date, including  a star with “A.B.” inside, “Patd. Buermann OK,” “Hand Forged Steel,” “Star Steel Silver,” “Hercules Bronze Patd.,” “Buermanns Patd.,” “Forged Steel,” and simply “Patent.”

Buermann was very innovative (and repeatedly copied) and patented many types of spurs and spur metal. In 1926 August Buermann’s grandsons sold the company.

Cid’s classic spurs would probably be considered Great Plains style (a mix of California and Texas/Mexican). They have a modest chap guard (the bump above the rowel) to keep the bottom of chaps from getting caught in the rowel. She still uses them in ranch roping and working cowhorse competitons, and “guards them with her life.”

     Beurmann spurs are currently selling for between $100 and $2,000, depending upon condition, style, material, age and marks.
