Ninemile Wildlands Training Center

 Equine & Backcountry Courses

 

March 2013 issue  

 

      The U.S. Forest Service Ninemile Wildlands Training Center will host its 2013 Heritage Expeditions Classes for people interested in backcountry equestrian skills, packing, and historic restoration. These classes are open to the public.

 

Leave No Trace (Stock) Master Educator

Learn the principles of Leave No Trace (LNT) as it applies to stock users and packers, taught by Bob Hoverson, Leave No Trace Master Educator.

 

Defensive Horsemanship & Safety

For new riders or a refresher course for more experienced riders on safe and efficient stock handling techniques and practices taught by Marc Haskins, horse trainer and Ninemile Ranch Manager. Bring your own horse.

Horse Handling and Training Techniques

Experienced riders learn safe, correct procedures for riding, handling, and training saddle horses and mules under difficult conditions from professional horse trainer and Ninemile Ranch Manager Marc Haskins. Bring your own horse or one will be provided. 

Ninemile Packing Clinic

Learn to pack mules and horses with Montana outfitter and author, Smoke Elser, assisted by Casey Burns and Northern Region Pack Train Lead Packer, Mark Pengelly. Five-day course includes an overnight pack trip. 

 

Advanced Packing Clinic

Six-day course taught by Casey Burns and Forest Service Packer Mark Pengelly, along with the Forest Service Northern Region Pack Train. Travel, camp and work in wilderness and backcountry areas.

 

Dutch Oven Cooking Basics

Taught by Colleen Sloan, a Dutch oven cook all of her life. One-day class covers: equipment for low impact cooking, seasoning and cleaning Dutch ovens, cooking for a crowd, backcountry menus and packing for backcountry trips. Tuition includes cookbook and Dutch oven. Reduced tuition for couples.

 

Advanced Dutch Oven Cooking

Learn candy making, ethnic dishes and gourmet meals; plus learn to cook on a cast iron wok and fry pans. Taught by Colleen Sloan. Reduced tuition for couples.

 

      Other courses from the Ninemile Wildlands Training Center include Crosscut Saw Maintenance & Sharpening; Complete Axemanship Skills; Bear Spray Training; Backcountry Survival Techniques; Practical Map, Compass and GPS; Introduction to Shop Tools for Cabinet, Window and Door Construction; Wood Shingle and Roofing Techniques; and Log Repair and Replacement for Historic Buildings.
