Big Sky Draft Horse Expo

 

September 2012 issue

 

     Expect a wagonload of fun at the 17th Annual Big Sky Draft Horse Expo to be held Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16, 2012, at the Powell County Fairgrounds in historic Deer Lodge, Montana .

     The Expo teams up with the Montana Academy of Living History Museum and the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site for an additional three days of educational and historical entertainment for the entire family.

     Expect to watch show classes during the Expo for both draft horses and mules such as the Six-Horse Hitch Conformation; Four-Horse Hitch and Four Abreast Driving; Junior and Senior Team Driving; Ladies, Pleasure and Junior Cart Driving; Tandem and Unicorn hitches; Antique, Unique and Street/Working Hitches; Teamster Classes; Feed Team Races; a kids’ Stick Horse Race, and more.

     A trade show during the Expo will feature all kinds of draft horse equipment, books and art. A Quilt Show will also be held at the Fairgrounds.

 

Big Sky Draft Horse Expo September 15-16, 2012, Deer Lodge, MT

     The Montana Academy of Living History will present a variety of hands-on workshops beginning Wednesday, September 12. Classes include Buggy/Wagon Wheel Construction; All About Harness; Dutch Oven Cooking; History of Black Powder Rifles; History of Cattle Brands; Gold Pans, Rockers and Dredges, and much more. Classes will be held at the Old Prison Museum and the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site.

     “Hot Dogs and History” at the Grant-Kohrs Ranch is a free family program for young and old that will be held Friday evening, September 14. Cook your hot dog over an open fire at this working 1,600 acre historic cattle ranch and hear tales of draft horse era history.

     Purchase a button for $18 that will be good for both days at the Expo, admission to three museums in Deer Lodge and Heritage Demonstrations.
