Hawk Attends Queen’s Diamond

Jubilee Pageant

August 2012 issue

Cherokee Gray Hawk (“Hawk”) is a Quarter Horse gelding bred by Lynn ’s Quarter Horses in Corvallis , Montana . He was purchased as a colt in 2009 by Monty Roberts, the “Man Who Listens To Horses,” and put into Roberts’ Willing Partners Training Program.

When the gray youngster’s training was complete, Roberts sold the horse along with Zimfandel, a young palomino gelding also bred by the Lynns , to a Dubai sheik and his wife. The two geldings were then flown to Dubai and moved into air-conditioned quarters at the Dubai Polo Club.

Monty Roberts, 77, has flown to the U.K. at least five times per year since 1989 to oversee the gentling of the young Royal racing Thoroughbreds owned by the Queen, a passionate horse lover. In that time, Roberts has become a trusted advisor to the Queen.

Monty and his wife, Pat, received a personal phone call from Queen Elizabeth inviting them to stay in a suite in Windsor Castle for the multi-day Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant marking her 60 years on the throne. The Pageant would be held at Windsor Castle during the Royal Windsor Horse Show, May 10-13, 2012.

When it was suggested to Monty that he ride Hawk, the horse’s owner arranged for him to be shipped from Dubai to London (at a cost of $15,000) to carry Roberts in four events during the Pageant.

Pat Roberts wrote Betty Lynn that Monty, riding Hawk, led “All the Queen’s Horses” – about 1,000 horses – into the arena to be presented to the Queen.

“Hawk was a super star,” wrote Pat Roberts. “He was really grand looking.”
