Nevada ’s Silver State Stampede

Celebrates 100 Years!

July 2012 issue

The 100th Silver State Stampede will be held at the Elko County Fairgrounds in Elko , Nevada , Wednesday through Sunday, July 11-15, 2012.

The rodeo began 100 years ago when GS Garcia — the world-famous bit, spur and saddle maker — decided that northern Nevada cowboys needed their own rodeo. The Stampede is unique in that it is the only professional rodeo to offer Garcia spurs to event winners.

This year’s Stampede begins with a concert featuring “Sawyer Brown” and “Little Texas” set for Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

The Kick-Off Party begins at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday with tri-tip dinner, open bar, Old West Bronc Riding and Calcutta , and a western dance with the Jeff Palmer Band. A $35 ticket includes both concert and Kick-off Party.

Don’t miss watching the exciting “Ring of Fear” event.

The PRCA Rodeo starts Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. with traditional roping and riding events, and also includes the popular Old West Bronc Riding Championships. This competition is held in the tradition of old-time buckaroos who ride broncs using their own stock saddles and everyday tack. The event simulates actual working conditions of authentic modern-day cowboys, and is open to amateurs and professionals.

Both Friday and Saturday nights feature “Ring of Fear” — the exciting and unpredictable contest pits five amateur “bullfighters” against one bull from the PRCA bucking string. Each person must remain in their designated circle as the bull charges, with contestants eliminated if they leave their circle to avoid the bull — a half-ton of athletic, angry hooves and horns. The last man standing (or lying) in his circle wins $500.

Each evening after the rodeo, the “Jeff Palmer Band” will offer live music and dancing under the stars. Sunday will feature Western States Bucking Bull Assn. Bull Futurity and Bull Riding.

The Stampede offers spectators high-quality food and beverages, including a fully-stocked Cowboy Bar and a trade show with Western vendors.
