The Saddle

A Poem by T.K. Cowen, Anchorage , Alaska

June 2012 issue

I was born of inspiration; made of silver, sweat and hide.

I’m a jewel and a tool and I’m ridden while I ride.

I traversed the dusty prairies with a soldier and his steed

‘til he waged his final battle. Sides don’t matter; they all bleed.

I saw Custer fall at Bighorn; I hauled Jesse James to jail.

Carried Wyatt Earp through Tombstone — I suppose you’ve heard that tale.

I saw the bison scatter when Bill Cody came to town.

I was riding with Pat Garrett when he took Will Bonney down.

And I also brought those little things, books and bottle caps,

razors, gold and mail, diamond rings and coyote traps.

Yes, I hauled your sundries westward as the settlers crossed the land,

So I played my part in history in ways both slight and grand.

I bore witness to your trials, Wounded Knee to Donner Pass ,

And I did it all while trapped between a backbone and an ass.
