The Language of Horses

A Poem by Magdalen Epperson, Thompson Falls, MT

April 2012 issue

Early on a crisp wintery morning,

As the sun shimmers on the fresh white snow,

On the horizon, running with manes and tails aglow,

Paints, bays, and roans, mares and foals,

Is there anything more beautiful for an eye to behold?

As free as a west bound breeze,

Far as the eye can see, no fence is there to be seen,

As much as a flicker of the ear, to a shift of weight,

They have a language all their own, soft and keen,

Not snow, not rain, nor hail, can come between.

The spirit of a horse you never want to break,

Care free and wild as a flower in the spring,

From rearing and striking, to nudges and whispers,

The little subtle things are hardly ever seen.
