The Owner

By Harold Roy Miller, Stagecoach, Nevada

December 2011 issue

My wife has always taken the stand,

Since the first day that I have known her,

She did not relish me being a ranch hand,

She wanted me to be the owner.

She was convinced I would not be up to snuff,

I was too much of a griping groaner,

So I needed to forget trying to be cowboy tough,

And just go on and be the owner.

Working “can’t-to-can’t” is a tiring affair;

We were both in complete accord.

And I knew I would look worse for the wear,

That’s something my pretty face could not afford.

So I took her advice and bought us some land

And got me some nice livestock.

Now I don’t have to be a hired hand

And be punching that burdensome time clock.

I can work if and when I feel like it,

And take a rest when I get tired.

If I want to, I can just up and quit

And don’t have to worry about being fired!

Working my spread puts a smile on my face

I have it fenced in every corner

It’s not big, but man, I sure love this place.

Because, you see, I am the owner.
