Tricia Purcell Trains Riders and Horses

September 2011 issue

Trainer Tricia Purcell, of Purcell Performance Horses, in Helena , Montana , has a passion for horses that shows in her goal-oriented coaching and training of riders and horses.

Purcell will start a colt or finish a performance horse but her specialty and first love is training reining horses. She says that the thrill of being able to take a horse to the next level is one of her most satisfying accomplishments.

Purcell counts among her mentors many fine competitors in reining competition. She explains that reining has a lot of horsemanship skills, and she has added to her knowledge through colt starting clinics to learn more natural horsemanship methods.

Purcell offers colt starting, reining and barrel racing training. She teaches riding lessons for all ages and experience, and coaching and showmanship for any level of competition. She imparts skills that build confidence in both the horse and rider, and helps to close any gap in communication.

People who have taken lessons and showmanship from Purcell praise her patience, flexibility and communication skills as a teacher. Purcell has had several wins at Montana Reining Horse Association shows, and continues to seek out opportunities to hone her own riding skills so that she can better teach others and to compete on a higher level herself.
