Camp K & Horses for Heroes

Participate in Utah Horse Expo

June 2011 issue

Special needs children and adults from Camp Kostopulos ( Camp K ), and veterans in the Camp K “Horses for Heroes” program were cheered by the crowd as they rode horses or drove mini horses in an exhibition during the Utah Horse Expo this past March.

“Many thanks to our horse instructor, Vanessa, and her assistant, Jenn Rudner; Captain Steve Kohne and his soldiers; VISTA volunteers Missy and Jessica, volunteer Jim Miller, barefoot trimmer Chad; volunteers from Personal Ponies; and the Camp K participants — Kirsty, Diane, Curtis and Kevin — for doing such a great job!” wrote Cheryl Smith, Camp K Development Director.

Camp K is part of the year-round recreation program at the Kostopulos Dream Foundation in Salt Lake City , Utah . Since 1967 the Foundation has been dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities through recreation and leisure education, including horseback riding. Camp K is a resident summer camp and travel adventure program for about 500 kids and adults with disabilities.

A new indoor equestrian facility has helped launch the Camp K “Horses for Heroes” program for veterans. A team of recreation and mental health therapists at the George Whalen Veterans Affairs Hospital partner with Camp K to offer the participating men and women veterans horseback riding and driving as physical and mental therapy.

For more information, call Cheryl Smith at 801-582-0700, ext 104, or visit www.campk.org.
