Hats Off!

Silverstar Ranch Wins National

Andalusian Horse Awards

April 2011 Issue

Pura Raza Española (PRE) horses, referred to as Andalusians in the U.S., owned by the Silverstar Ranch in Riverton, Wyoming, took home several national champion titles from the International Andalusian & Lusitano Horse Association (IALHA) National Show in Fort Worth, TX, held October 12–17, 2010.

The ranch is owned by Celia Stenfors-Dacre, MD, MBA, and Alan Dacre, MD, and they collaborated with trainers Howard and Erica Peet, of Peet Equestrian in Riverton , UT , to prepare Silverstar’s horses for the annual breed shows.

Celia met her first Pura Raza Española or Pure Spanish Horse in 1979 while in high school in Southern California . She recalls that “Majorio was a beautiful, gray PRE stallion that had been imported from Spain by television producer Greg Garrison. I decided that one day I would own PRE horses like Majorio.”

She purchased her first PRE mare in 1998 shortly after moving to Wyoming , and the mare produced four foals. Silverstar Ranch has also acquired another six PRE horses, including Ladino GF, puchased from Lanys Kaye-Eddie of Gremlan Farms in Bakersfield , CA .

Silverstar Farms showed three horses at the IALHA National Show in October 2010, where Ladino GF won the most-coveted National Grand Champion Anadalusian Senior Stallion Five Years and Over. Ladino GF also won National Grand Champion Andalusian Senior Stallion in both open and amateur classes, and Reserve National Champion Andalusian Country English Pleasure Open and Country Pleasure Driving.

Lativo GF won the National Champion Andalusian English Pleasure Hunt Seat Open, and Analena ADF won National Champion Young Horse Dressage Sport Horse Prospect In-Hand Andalusian Fillies Three Years & Under.

Celia notes that “Christopher Columbus and the Spanish first introduced the PRE horse to the United States and their influence is seen in all of our present-day horses with the exception of the Arabian horse.

“PRE horses were re-introduced into the US in 1961 and are steadily growing in number due to their athleticism, beauty and disposition. They are commonly known as the bullfighting horse of Spain .

“When the PRE is crossed on an American Quarter Horse, the offspring is known as the ‘Azteca.’ The Azteca is making its way into many reining and cattle work competitions in the US .”

Silverstar Ranch plans to show their PRE horses in exhibitions in Wyoming this year. For more information, visit www.silverstarandalusians.com and Peet Equestrian at www.peetequestrian.com.
