Memorial Mules

July 2009 Issue

Memorial Day 2009 was kind of a cool day for mules, muleskinners, and good old boys in little Corvallis , Montana . For the uninitiated, Corvallis ’s biggest event of the year is its Memorial Day Parade. For Jack and Helen Eden, it opens hitching season; it even means giving the mules their first bath of the year, no matter how nasty the weather! This year Jack was honored to haul his teamster-friend Billy Hoblitt in the parade. Between 93-year-old Billy and 80-year-old Jack, there’s more than 170 years of teamster experience!

Billy is looking forward to attending his 70th class reunion from Montana State University this summer. He graduated with a degree in animal husbandry from there in 1939.

Making the event even more special was the appearance of Monty, the University of Montana mascot, on the wagon, too. Griz Monty and arch rival Bobcat Billy (MSU’s mascot is a Bobcat) managed to control their animosities, and the parade went off without a hitch — or a rain cloud!

Photo and commentary by muleskinner Helen Eden, Hamilton , Montana .
